I don't think we have to be doomed, but huge changes are needed, in the same way that they are for climate change, plastics or food systems.
Do read the rest of his books, they are all good. I just finished Magic Pill about Ozempic.

Read his other one about addiction and the war on drugs - it's called Chasing the Scream. There is a lot to discuss after as it countered a lot of my beliefs after reading Empire of Pain and watching various things on the opioid epidemic.
