Stuck on "updated registration agreement" page
« on: October 21, 2024, 09:27:02 AM »
Went to access the forums today on my desktop and I was prompted with an updated registration agreement page with no option to accept/continue.

I'm still logged in in my phone so I'm able to post here. Any ideas how to continue?

I got that too. I just clicked on the link in the breadcrumbs near the top of the page for "The Money Mustache Community".

And please, can we get an explanation of these new terms, especially the $5 fee?

Huh, when I click any of the breadcrumbs (or any other links- search, profile, "unread posts", etc)  I just get redirected back to the same Updated Registration Agreement page.

Didn't make screen shots, unfortunately. I did open the Developer Tools in the browser and went to the source tab. Search for "I agree". There are two lines starting with "<input"... Copy both lines. Above there is a DIV line. Remember the name that is next to it. It's "confirmationButton" or something similiar.

Then go to the element selection page in Developer Tools. Click the element tool in the upper left corner of the tools pane and go down to the ad at the bottom of the page. On the way various element on the page should show up in a different color. Select the advertisement. In the developer tools pane you should see a DIV line just above the add. Right-click and select "Edit as HTML". Between ">" and "</DIV>" paste the two input lines you copied in the previous step. Click outside the edit box.

A button labeled "I agree" should appear on the page. Click that button. The page should reload. Then select any of the links in the menu at the top.

If you are stuck on the registration agreement page, unfortunately in order to be able to read this message here, you need to log out and come here as a guest. Whenever you are logged on, the only thing you see is the updated registration agreement page.

Aha! Got it working by disabling Javascript on the page and all of a sudden the "I agree" button appeared!

Well that's really weird, especially the money request.

Investigating. Thanks for posting (and those that emailed me directly to let me know).

I wasn't able to find the "I agree" HTML Chris was talking about, but I started trying different links and I think I ended up going to Members > View the memberlist and the terms and conditions page loaded again, but this time with an "I agree" button, so anybody stuck could try different links to see if a version of the terms and conditions loads with the button.

This also happened to me. https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/ redirected to https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/index.php?action=agreement;sa=agreement, and didn't have an "I agree" button. After clicking around (either Show Unread or Show New Replies, I can't remember), I got to a link that directed to the same page with a button, and now it seems to be working ok?

The policy was fairly short and I read (but did not memorize) it. Mostly the agreement was that posters would be kind courteous truthful & "clean" aka no porn. There wasn't anything that set off alarm bells for me.

If it's solely about reducing spam, maybe existing members can obtain a few referral codes for "free" membership.

Thanks @arebelspy - after restarting my phone I did still get the agreement screen but this time with an I agree button, so I clicked that and was able to log-in. PC worked without an agreement screen. And since I didn't get asked for my credit card or bank account number at any stage, I feel less like I'm about to be scammed out of all my money. :-)

I had this problem also and immediately assumed I said something wrong to get kicked out of the club.
Same here. And then I thought maybe my employer had found some devious way to stop me accessing the site from work. Hooray for my brain.

I did not directly, but was able to contact others who did make the agreement button appear.

Yes. I'll let FrugalToque comment more, this is something the two of them would like to try.

Feel free (anyone) to start another thread to discuss this and tag him and myself.

I'm not sure if I'll be allowed to register people free, but yeah, that's a good idea. A "sponsor" of sorts.

Oh, I don’t like the new agreement. We promise not to post “inaccurate”  information. Good luck with that. Who’s going to vet that, the Biden ministry of truth (his Disinformation Governance Board?) Will we get Nina Jankowicz in here to moderate, the Biden appointee who is well acquainted with untruths having perpetuated several herself?

It has the potential to be used as a cudgel for wrong think.

It also bans cursing and strong language. I personally do not mind such and don’t associate MMM with such a Nannyish tone,  but whatever. This seems like a boilerplate agreement from a place with no face punching, a kinder, gentler place.

That agreement was not changed in any way except for the header about how we're trying to deal with spam now that the MMM app is no longer maintained and can't be used.

The rest of the "agreement"?  Unchanged for probably years.

Seems odd to ban cursing when "Share Your Badassity" is a devoted sub-section of the forum.  Pretty fucking ironic.

When I joined in 2012 it seems the cursing was more encouraged than not.

Haha, ok. But I still do not like it.

I thought the old agreement was often summarized as “ don’t be a dick”:which I liked, but now I see that was an inadequate summary.

Now you’ve ruined their chance to create an entirely new conspiracy theory where  the sign-in terms of an obscure personal finance web forum are somehow related to a shadowy plot by the government!

There is a difference between saying “that’s f—-ing stupid” and “you’re f—-ing stupid”.  The latter becomes a personal attack which I don’t see much of around here. The former might fit perfectly well in a face-punch.

Overall, I enjoy this forum because people generally have thoughtful responses. Sometimes they’re so thought-provoking that I think some of you  should be doing something like leading our country rather than demonstrating your intelligence on an internet forum.  And then there are a few that might very well be trolls, and you geniuses try to thoughtfully explain why they’re wrong, and they don’t get it, and you never do tell them they’re f—ing stupid… in so many words, anyway.  In any case, with the exception of now seemingly rare face-punches, the lack of swearing name-calling makes this a better place.

Will we get Nina Jankowicz in here to moderate, the Biden appointee who is well acquainted with untruths having perpetuated several herself?

It has the potential to be used as a cudgel for wrong think.

It also bans cursing and strong language. I personally do not mind such and don’t associate MMM with such a Nannyish tone,  but whatever. This seems like a boilerplate agreement from a place with no face punching, a kinder, gentler place.

I have terrifying news for you.

That agreement was not changed in any way except for the header about how we're trying to deal with spam now that the MMM app is no longer maintained and can't be used.

The rest of the "agreement"?  Unchanged for probably years.

Toque.

Now you’ve ruined their chance to create an entirely new conspiracy theory where  the sign-in terms of an obscure personal finance web forum are somehow related to a shadowy plot by the government!

please, let me have my conspiracy theories. If they give me comfort, what is that to you? Ha ha.

As for the accuracy that is required in the participation agreement of this website, it may be noted the Biden administration DID In FACT start up a ministry of truth that was called Disinformation Governance Board that was headed up by someone who had promoted an embarrassing number of inaccurate and pandering ideas herself.

You can’t make this shit up.
